My parents live in a very rural location in Buncombe County on the property that I grew up on in the 1980s-90s. This account describes my drive from Candler on the west side of Asheville, along I-40 through Black Mountain and Old Fort, and through the back roads to get to their house. This is also an observation of how Helene changed the landscape and my realizations in the moment.
This was written one week after Helene, when the roads were finally clear enough to get to my parents' house and bring some supplies.
