Description
Many sacred burial grounds for enslaved and formerly enslaved people who experienced unspeakable crimes against humanity did not get adequate maintenance support prior to the hurricane. To support and provide assistance, Land of Sky Regional Council received a grant to help and I serve as Project Manager working with Community Members across the region. Now after the hurricane additional support is needed for these very special places. Many veterans are also interred here.
These pictures are taken at the South Asheville Cemetery, 20 Dalton St. The oldest public cemetery of formerly enslaved people + in WNC. Trees came down and community members came together to help. Further help continues to be needed.
