WIDESPREAD & TOUR
Description
The first article discuss the environmental impacts of the flood and the tour government officials took to survey damage in the area. Floodwaters swept away five 30,000-gallon petrol tanks and sent them down the Swannanoa River, resulting in reports of 'a heavy smell of fuel in the air'. Things like cars, flooded treatment plants, and septic tanks also contributed to the contamination and smell. The smell from the petroleum tanks was said to be nauseating, and officials hired by the EPA are unsure how extensive the contamination is. A section detailing damage to water treatment plants along with the locations of major spills is printed here. The tanks had been in their pre-flood location since the 1960s and would have needed cranes in order to be moved, according to the company that owned them. In the second article, the govrenment officials' tour around WNC is detailed. A state of emergency is declared and aid is requested for 15 impacted counties. Estimates of damage won't be available for at least two days.
