Article describes the experiences of people who evacuated or were rescued from their homes after the Toe River rose past its banks and flooded their homes. It also describes conditions in Yancey County, where residents were quickly stranded by the waters. Swiftwater rescue teams worked to evacuate residents of Mitchell and Avery Counties. A volunteer firefighter expresses his frustration of people going past barricades and needing to be rescued. A woman living off of social security checks worries about where she'll go after her mobile home was destroyed by the flood. The article is accompanied by two pictures. The top picture depicts the South Toe River flooding a person's property after it rose past its banks. This photo was taken by John Coutlakis. The second picture depicts Spruce Pine residents watching their mobile homes flood.
