Flood Waters Ravage WNC
Description
Article describing the effects of the flooding. No deaths or injuries were reported, but dozens of people had to evacuate flooded homes and campsites. Tropical Storm Beryl is cited as the cause of the flooding. A local insurance agency estimates that property damage could be in excess of $10 million. It is stated that the flooding was worsened by 'steady rain' throughout the summer. 5-9" of rain were reported at different points along the French Broad. The article is accompanied by a photo of firefighters rescuing a woman from her partially-submerged car. The photo was taken by John Coutlakis. Stories of business owners moving their stock to higher shelves are printed here. Some sort of chemical leaked into the floodwaters after it leaked from a tank. The eastern portions of Buncombe County were hit the worst; around 200 people were evacuated from around Montreat, Black Mountain, and Swannanoa. Several roads have been blocked by flooding. Tow trucks are retrieving cars from flooded portions of roads. Stories of rescues and washed out roads in other counties are printed here. A picture taken by Debbie Chase-Jennings of a man paddling in an inner tube along Sweeten Creek Road is printed here.
