Flood Aftermath
Description
Article summarizes different facets of the recent flood. A unusually-stagnant low pressure system is cited being responsible for the flood. An expert says that low pressure systems are common in Western North Carolina, but one that 'sticks around this long' is rare. He then goes on to explain why different regions got the amounts of rain they did, and how a low pressure system forms. In Water Affected, it is stated that some private supplies of water have been contaminated and are now unsuitable for bathing or drinking. Instructions for purifying water are given here. City water supplies in Asheville are undergoing a chlorination process and is safe to use, despite its looks. The Asheville chapter of the Red Cross is requesting donations to put towards recovery efforts. Schools in Buncombe, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties are currently closed, due to the compromised integrity of roads in these counties. Schools will be opening back up between the 9th and the 15th. Deliveries of the Asheville Citizen have been delayed due to floods damaging and blocking roads.
