WCU Campus Will Close Due to Water Problems
Description
Article describes WCU being closed after the recent flood, due to a lack of drinkable water on campus. The intake pipes of the water treatment plant that serves the campus have been clogged, and as a result, the store of water at the plant have dropped to 200,000 gallons from its usual 1.4 million gallons. Two water lines have also broken, worsening the situation. Students living on campus were able to get cold water at the student union building. 8.48" of water fell around Trout Creek, soaking the private earthen dam there all the way through. Measures have been taken to relieve pressure from the dam and prevent it from bursting. Property damage across three counties is around $1.5 million; 1 million in Haywood County, and between $250,000-$300,000 in Jackson and Macon Counties. Most of the damage in Haywood County was done to roads and bridges in the area. A small dam near Goldmine burst. Evacuees were housed in local schools before they were able to return to their homes on Sunday.
