Rain-Soaked WNC Is Hit By Flooding
Description
Front page article describing the flash floods. The flooding began on Friday and continued through Saturday, but no one was injured. A state of emergency has been declared in Haywood County. Hundreds of people were evacuated, but most have been able to return to their homes. Haywood, Cherokee, Clay, Macon, Swain, Graham, and Jackson Counties had all been issued a tornado warning, which continued until 11 pm yesterday evening. Flash flood warnings were cancelled at 5pm that day. Details about closed and re-opened roads are printed here. Barring any more rain, two dams on Cullowhee Mountain are expected to hold, although a great deal of water spilled over top one of them. Families below the dam have been warned that they may need to evacuate. A car accident knocked out power to 1700 people for around 40 minutes. Other outages have also occured, but none for very long. The water treatment plant in Canton was nearly flooded. No estimates have been made yet, but the cost of damage to property like mobile homes, farm equipment, and basements were 'heavy'.
