Buncombe County is Seeking Federal Disaster Funds
Description
Front page article describing county officials' efforts to attain federal relief funds to 'cushion' the cost of flood damage. Weather forecasters do not expect the rain to continue. Golf course authorities say that the small pond and the concrete barrier holding it back did not break, and therefore did not contribute to mobile homes in Fowler's Trailer Park washing away. County officials are trying to get a solid estimate of damages before they begin their petitions for funding. The same officials believe that $2 million is a conservative estimate. Pictures are being taken of the damages in order to better argue the case for federal relief funding. They also say the funding request will cover several counties, not just Buncombe. App State has reported $150,000 in damages, and five flooded buildings. Tornadoes touched down between Rutherford and Mecklenburg Counties. People are moving back into their homes and shelters are being discontinued in areas like Woodfin, where damage was not as extreme. Primary roads are in good condition, but secondary roads are much worse off. The status of bridges in the county are cited as the main problem with the roads. Buncombe and McDowell Counties were hit the worse in this regard. Washouts have closed Old Fort, Garren Creek, East Porter, Amboy, and Merrill's Cove Roads. Between the bridges and the damage to the roads, the damage is likely above $1 million. Wet telephone cables are largely blamed for the outages.
