Floods, Storms Kill At Least 7
Description
Front page article states that the death count has risen to 7, but three people have been found in the past day; reducing the total number of missing persons to two. The Buncombe County Health Department warns county residents that well water should be tested for pathogens, & that furnaces and basement wells should be avoided in order to prevent electrocution. Eleven health inspectors are travelling around testing water. The identities of the dead are printed here. Shelters have opened for those who lost their homes. 11 bridges and 7 roads have been closed by the water. 400 telephone lines were down at one point, and 250 are still down across Buncombe, Henderson, and Haywood Counties. A family escaped a burning home in nothing but their pajamas after the building had been struck by lightning. Schools are closed. Floodwaters in Moore have risen 3' above the water pumps, leading the county mayor to declare a state of emergency. Most of the damage to the national parks in the area was sustained by human infrastructure; roads, bridges, and campgrounds.
