Two Others Are Missing; Loss Heavy
Description
Article describing the impact of the 1973 flood. At least $2 million in damages have been reported. Four people were washed away along with their trailer and killed near Mills Gap Road. Two of the four bodies were recovered, along with the remains of the trailer, near Christ Road School Bridge. The area around Fairview accounts for half the cost of the damage. Most of Buncombe County is under high water. The National Guard has been sent to assist in the recovery effort. Rain is likely to continue throughout the day, and the flash flood warning will continue. Damages to various highways are printed here. 12-15 mobile homes in the Fernwood Trailer Park in Fairview--the same trailer park that the four confirmed deaths happened at--were destroyed by the floodwaters, and the damage to them is estimated to cost $100,000. The French Broad crested at 13.11'. Between Rosman and South Buncombe, nearly 500 people were evacuated away from the flooding. 20 people were stranded at a campground due to the entry bridge being swept away. Shelters have been set up for the displaced. Roads closed overnight in Asheville proper have since reopened. Most of the damage to the city has been done by water, not wind, according to the City Manager. Asheville Airport is functioning normally, and planes are arriving and departing on schedule. Emergency crews are working to keep the lights on and keep underground power lines dry. Multiple underground pipes have been damaged. Despite this, falling trees knocking out power lines continues to be a problem. Southern Railway has its own fair share of problems; some parts of their tracks have had the ground below them washed away, and other parts of their tracks have been covered by a mudslide. They expect train service to resume Tuesday morning. Bus routes are operating normally.
