In Buncombe county, the damage is estimated to cost around $35,000. $2,900 was done to homes, $28,050 to businesses and 'industrial units', and $3,750 to small farms and gardens. These estimates do not include damage in Black Mountain, Broad River, and Swannanoa. A member of the local Red Cross chapter is astounded that the damage cost wasn't higher, and says the biggest loss was crops. The French Broad is stated to have crested at 11.8', and the Swannanoa River at 14.6'. A bad mudslide happened at the Pink Beds, and authorities warn people to be careful around the area. Observation from an airplane revealed that while streams are back in their banks, fields and other low -lying areas are still full of water. Citizen reports about the status of various towns are printed here. Complete losses of some crops, like corn, cabbage, and beans were reported in some places along the Mills and French Broad rivers. Canton residents are pumping water out of their basements. Basements and first floors of homes in Franklin County still have water in them. Significant damage to highways around Burnsville have been reported, with one 1200' section of highway between Burnsville and Pensacola being washed out. All swinging bridges around Burnsville are gone, and some highway bridges have been washed out. Burnsville's water supply was cut off when several mains broke.
