Description
Series of photos of the 1940 flood. Each picture is labelled with a number. Picture 1 of the Enka gate as water from Hominy Creek poured into the American Enka Corporation's rayon plant. Picture 2 is of that plant before the water receded. Picture 3 is the remains of a bridge in Cullowhee. This picture was taken by . Picture 4 is of Park Avenue in Canton being submerged in over 3' of water from the Pigeon River. Picture 5 is of Old Mill Inn off US 19 west being flooded by the Tuckaseegee River. Two small buildings were floated away, like the two in the picture. Picture 6 is of a building in Marshall after floodwaters began receding. Picture 7 is of a store that had its rear end ripped off in Fibreville. Picture 8 is an aerial view of Biltmore.
