Traffic Blocked by Big Slides Caused by Rains
Description
Front page article describes landslides near Hendersonville. Rain in Henderson County amounted to 2.5 inches in under 24 hours. Hendersonville proper is not flooded, but the surrounding lowlands are. The rain began on the 14th at 3pm and "has not let up since", making for nearly 3 days of nonstop rainfall. Cars have been turned away from Bat Cave, and it's rumored that two houses and a bridges in that area have been washed away. Several other bridges in Buncombe County are going out. The Swannanoa and French Broad Rivers are rising rapidly. Train service to the area is suspended, and the State Highway Commissioner is advising motorists to not drive unless absolutely necessary due to floods covering and damaging the roads. Men have already been sent to the sites of slides in the area to begin cleaning up, and work is being done to prevent any more telephone lines in the area from going down.
