Front page article describes the death toll rising to 29; full reports still aren't in, and 18 more deaths were reported yesterday alone. Railroad service has been partially restored; trains can now reach and leave Asheville through the Murphy branch. Chimeny Rock is effectively gone, and many of the houses were washed away; the ones still standing left unreachable. Trains carrying mail and provisions are set to arrive in Asheville. Stories of four people who sacrificed their own lives to save the lives of others are detailed here. Eight people in Bat Cave have drowned, and the survivors in the town are starving. Four women are trapped in a train station between Asheville and Knoxville, and two of them drown. 1000 men and 115 convicts are put to work repairing flood damage, and a concrete bridge is planned for Craggy. Train service between Asheville and Columbia is expected to resume Saturday. The head of the relief committee for West Asheville states that due to most of it being at a higher elevation, West Asheville at large did not suffer very much during the floods. Citizen newspapers sold "like hotcakes" the monday of the storm. The stories of four people who sacrificed their own lives to save the lives of others are shared here. Companies with plants on the riverside are eager to get their plants running again if at all possible. The committees are working hard to help with this effort. Power is still for the most part only in downtown Asheville. Ice is still in short supply, but the Asheville Ice Company is trying to get back in working order. Emergency work on county roads is underway, and plans are made to replace bridges that were washed away. A good portion of this emergency work is being done by convicts. Despite the state of some of the stretches of track, two trains carrying provisions are set to arrive in Asheville in the evening.
