Train Service Into Asheville From East Suspended at Present
Description
Trains--both freight and passenger--have been unable to enter or leave the Asheville area due to landslides and washouts around Saluda mountain. Clearing the debris is heavily dependent on the condition of the weather. Trains that did leave Asheville the night before are being held at other stations, and officals are wary of running them because of the compromised integrity of the railroads. Railroads doing their best to re-open the train lines, and current estimate is that they'll reopen at 8pm tonight. Trains that were expected to arrive in Asheville today are being postponed or cancelled. Rail officials say that if the landslides at Saluda Mountain are cleared, then they'll operate Salisbury to Asheville trains from that route. Saluda mountain is one of the steepest railways in the US, and there's been a survey for a less-steep route to prevent freight train crashes.
