Great Hurricane Exhausts Force in the Mountains
Description
Article describes Swannanoa River flooding Azalea Woodworking company; water was 2' deep on the floor of the mill as of 2 in the morning. Hurricane arrived and 1.33 inches of steady rain fell for ~24 hrs, which led to river rising past its banks. Asheville entirely cut off from train service to the eastern portions of the state for the first time due to downed wires from landslide on Saluda mountain and a washout at its base. Asheville citizen had to coordinate with Associated Press in order to get service. Henderson County hit hard by the second bout of rain; ground is soaked, streams overflowing, and lots of debris being washed into French Broad River. Yancey and Mitchell Counties both flooded, more than they were on the 11th. Rail service throughout the region discontinued due to landslides and bridges being washed away. Asheville proper relatively unaffected, aside from selling lots of raincoats and umbrellas. Cloudburst reported at the headwaters of the Swannanoa, and it is expected to have damaged the watershed. Rainfall believed to be largely finished by this point, aside from intermittent showers throughout the day.
