Learning to Walk in the Storm

This is one of the only pictures I took during Helene. My 14 month old daughter learned to walk just as Helene hit. Some of her first steps included this vignette, toddling to the water canteen. 35 days after losing water in our home, my daughter’s first ideas of filling bottles, rinsing dishes , and filling our dog’s water dish involved this canteen. Our friends one county over brought us this canteen after the first two weeks without water. I cried when I opened the door to find the full canteen and buckets of flushing water delivered to our door. It is an image I find hard to look at, and yet I love the pride in my daughter’s face as she does an important job.
