Pritchard likens this flood to the memorial day weekend flood three years prior, but in contrast to that flood, no people were killed or injured on the 28th. It also states that the final cost of damage in the 1973 flood was around $8 million. The cost of damage from this flood is estimated to exceed $1 million. The worst hit areas were Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Candler and Fairview. Property and crop losses were high in these places. The cost of the damage in the region is estimated to be $750,000, with $100,000 being from Canton alone, and half of that having been suffered by the Champion Fibre Company specifically. 4 people are known to have died; three by drowning and one by a live wire. Crops are badly damaged, and there is currently no estimated cost. However, "it was known that whole valleys had been swept bare of crops, the valleys of the French Broad, Swannanoa, and Pigeon Rivers being notable examples." Description An account of the resource Article explains that people in the upper French Broad River Basin and surrounding areas don't believe that a flood like the one in 1916 could happen again, as there "has not really been a catastrophic flood since that time". This incorrect belief is part of the reasoning behind the opposition to the implementation of the TVA's flood control plan from the 1940s. The author then compares tropical storm Agnes to the storm that caused the 1916 flood. They state that the Upper French Broad area was 'lucky' that the storm hadn't hit harder. The author also argues non-flood related benefits of the reservoirs, saying that they would create "new water resources for homes and industry and new recreation areas." The author ends by stating that the homeowners that oppose the construction of the reservoirs are a loud minority, and that other homeowners shouldn't be swayed by what they say. Floodwaters swept away five 30,000-gallon petrol tanks and sent them down the Swannanoa River, resulting in reports of 'a heavy smell of fuel in the air'. Things like cars, flooded treatment plants, and septic tanks also contributed to the contamination and smell. The smell from the petroleum tanks was said to be nauseating, and officials hired by the EPA are unsure how extensive the contamination is. A section detailing damage to water treatment plants along with the locations of major spills is printed here. The tanks had been in their pre-flood location since the 1960s and would have needed cranes in order to be moved, according to the company that owned them. Description An account of the resource Article compares the flood from Hurrican Ivan to the flood of 1916. Both floods were caused by two back-to-back hurricanes, and both caused extensive damage to the homes and businesses they covered. Excerpts of Wilma Dykeman's The French Broad are printed here, and she references a 'scarcely documented' flood that covered WNC in 1791. While it's uncertain how closely the 2004 floods compare to the 1916 floods, the amount of buildings in the area, changes in the flood beds, and sharp increases in impermeable surfaces like asphalt, have surely worsened the damage from the flood. Three photos accompany the article. The first two depict the same view in the vicinity of Biltmore Village, with both seeing similar levels of flooding. To support and provide assistance, Land of Sky Regional Council received a grant to help and I serve as Project Manager working with Community Members across the region. Now after the hurricane additional support is needed for these very special places. Many veterans are also interred here. These pictures are taken at the South Asheville Cemetery, 20 Dalton St. The oldest public cemetery of formerly enslaved people + in WNC. Trees came down and community members came together to help. Further help continues to be needed.
