The intake pipes of the water treatment plant that serves the campus have been clogged, and as a result, the store of water at the plant have dropped to 200,000 gallons from its usual 1.4 million gallons. Two water lines have also broken, worsening the situation. Students living on campus were able to get cold water at the student union building. 8.48" of water fell around Trout Creek, soaking the private earthen dam there all the way through. Measures have been taken to relieve pressure from the dam and prevent it from bursting. Property damage across three counties is around $1.5 million; 1 million in Haywood County, and between $250,000-$300,000 in Jackson and Macon Counties. Most of the damage in Haywood County was done to roads and bridges in the area. A small dam near Goldmine burst. Evacuees were housed in local schools before they were able to return to their homes on Sunday. ]]></dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Front page article describing county officials' efforts to attain federal relief funds to 'cushion' the cost of flood damage. Weather forecasters do not expect the rain to continue. Golf course authorities say that the small pond and the concrete barrier holding it back did not break, and therefore did not contribute to mobile homes in Fowler's Trailer Park washing away. County officials are trying to get a solid estimate of damages before they begin their petitions for funding. The same officials believe that $2 million is a conservative estimate. Pictures are being taken of the damages in order to better argue the case for federal relief funding. They also say the funding request will cover several counties, not just Buncombe. App State has reported $150,000 in damages, and five flooded buildings. Tornadoes touched down between Rutherford and Mecklenburg Counties. People are moving back into their homes and shelters are being discontinued in areas like Woodfin, where damage was not as extreme. Primary roads are in good condition, but secondary roads are much worse off. The status of bridges in the county are cited as the main problem with the roads. Buncombe and McDowell Counties were hit the worse in this regard. Washouts have closed Old Fort, Garren Creek, East Porter, Amboy, and Merrill's Cove Roads. Between the bridges and the damage to the roads, the damage is likely above $1 million. Wet telephone cables are largely blamed for the outages. ]]></dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Article describing the impact of the 1973 flood. At least $2 million in damages have been reported. Four people were washed away along with their trailer and killed near Mills Gap Road. Two of the four bodies were recovered, along with the remains of the trailer, near Christ Road School Bridge. The area around Fairview accounts for half the cost of the damage. Most of Buncombe County is under high water. The National Guard has been sent to assist in the recovery effort. Rain is likely to continue throughout the day, and the flash flood warning will continue. Damages to various highways are printed here. 12-15 mobile homes in the Fernwood Trailer Park in Fairview--the same trailer park that the four confirmed deaths happened at--were destroyed by the floodwaters, and the damage to them is estimated to cost $100,000. The French Broad crested at 13.11'. Between Rosman and South Buncombe, nearly 500 people were evacuated away from the flooding. 20 people were stranded at a campground due to the entry bridge being swept away. Shelters have been set up for the displaced. Roads closed overnight in Asheville proper have since reopened. Most of the damage to the city has been done by water, not wind, according to the City Manager. Asheville Airport is functioning normally, and planes are arriving and departing on schedule. Emergency crews are working to keep the lights on and keep underground power lines dry. Multiple underground pipes have been damaged. Despite this, falling trees knocking out power lines continues to be a problem. Southern Railway has its own fair share of problems; some parts of their tracks have had the ground below them washed away, and other parts of their tracks have been covered by a mudslide. They expect train service to resume Tuesday morning. Bus routes are operating normally. ]]></dcterms:description>

The hurricane was caused by flash flooding from a 20-hour storm. Henderson and Haywood counties were hit worst due to their relative flatness. The corn crop in these counties was destroyed by the floodwaters. The Red Cross worked to evacuate, shelter, feed, and return families to their homes in low lying areas. Champion Fibre's Fibreville was evacuated as it began to flood. The mill itself was protected by dikes. Water only entered the digester building, but even then the damage was minimal. The plant did, however, close down for five hours, sharply limiting production. ]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:title><![CDATA[Floods Sweep W.N.C. Towns]]></dcterms:title>
<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Front page article describing how several WNC towns were hit by their "second flood in three weeks". A picture of a plant belonging to the America Enka Corporation being flooded by water from Hominy Creek is shown. Water rose to 5' inside the building. Communications have been largely cut off, and the damage estimate is not yet known. U.S. Weather Bureau officials say the French Broad crested at 13', but reached 22.3' in Hot Springs. 1,000 employees at the American Enka plant tried to prevent damage from the flood before being stranded on the second flood and subsequently rescued in boats. Damage reports for various towns are printed. Canton is underwater; trains, traffic, and communications are all unable to reach it. No casualties are reported yet. More reports of the status of towns in the area are listed. A report on the status of the highways in the area is printed here. Three more pictures of the flooding are included, and all were taken in Biltmore (village). The first depicts a train leaving the train station while three women watch on a sidewalk, slightly elevated above the water. The train tracks are covered in water. In the second, spectators watch water rise up to meet the concrete Biltmore bridge that they're standing on. In the third, a child wades through water ~1' deep in a plaza. Final counts of rainfall amounts are printed here. All of the Hominy valley around the American Enka plant was flooded. At 1:30 water began to seep in and by morning it had reached 5'. At 4:40 am, electric service to the area around the plant was cut off. Pisgah National Forest received severe damage. "Considerable erosion damage" was reported, and the Bent Creek camping grounds as well as picnic areas were ruined. The south and west sides of Mount Pisgah saw similar damage. A detailed timeline of the flooding at the Enka plant is printed here. An early damage estimate says that the cost "may be as high as half a million dollars". As the water rose up to the machines, it would mix with the chemicals from the rayon and form "Gummy masses of fluid" around the machines. Flooding hit Candler before Enka, and "washed out one bridge and perched a house atop another". Enka plant employees were told to be on standby, as their help will be needed to fix the factory. ]]></dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Front page article describing the damages from the 1928 flood. The cost of the damage in the region is estimated to be $750,000, with $100,000 being from Canton alone, and half of that having been suffered by the Champion Fibre Company specifically. 4 people are known to have died; three by drowning and one by a live wire. Crops are badly damaged, and there is currently no estimated cost. However, "it was known that whole valleys had been swept bare of crops, the valleys of the French Broad, Swannanoa, and Pigeon Rivers being notable examples." Wire service has been mostly restores, and trains are beginning to return to the area. Kanuga Dam, which gave out during the storm, will be rebuilt. Other dams are expected to hold, assuming no more rain comes. The French Broad crested at 13.3'. Routes in and out of Asheville are detailed, namely which roads are fully open, which ones are restricted, and which ones are closed. Heavy damage is reported in the Pisgah National Forest; two bridges have been washed out and the steel bridge was pushed "18 inches out of alignment". Bee Tree dam is holding strong, and sustained no damage whatsoever. Damages to companies based in the area are detailed here. Mail service is almost at normal operations. Damage to specific towns is also detailed here. ]]></dcterms:description>
