<dcterms:description>Mill stone lost in 1916 flood—found after Hurricane Helene

Merrimon Featherstone, pioneer early settler in Buncombe (now Henderson) County built and operated a dam, sash sawmill and grist mill in the early 1800s on what is now known as Featherstone Creek. All was lost in the great flood of 1916. Later, in the 1930s, his descendant, Ambrose Mills Featherstone, rebuilt the dam, a power plant, and a camp that catered to tourists. In the 1940s or '50s, he found the larger mill stone down the creek and returned it to the family property at the entrance of the Brookside Camp, that he ran with his wife Eula. The long-lost smaller grindstone was found downstream of the original sawmills and recovered after Helene. </dcterms:description>

It was from the West Asheville Library parking lot that I was first able, on September 30, to post an update on Instagram to let my wider network of friends know my family was safe. (The day before that, I'd found cell service at the parking lot of Asheville FM and called my immediate family.)

From there, I quickly fell into a routine of walking here for a daily dose of Internet to catch up on texts, check for updates, scroll, post, scroll... Meanwhile, remote employees like these folks set up an impressive little hub for co-working outside the closed library. We all might not have been able to shower all week, but this was a little semblance of normalcy.
The weather was nice enough to sit and plug into outlets on the sides of buildings like the West Asheville Library or Firestorm Books (and maybe sort some donated items while you waited).
